Ingredients

  • 2 rolls crusty sandwich rolls sourdough or Italian work great
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted 15 ml
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup marinara sauce 240 ml
  • 12 slices pepperoni
  • 3 sticks string cheese
  • 8 candy eyes or pitted black olive slices if preferred

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Split each roll in half lengthwise and place the four halves cut side up on a baking sheet. Brush the cut surfaces with the melted butter.
  3. Sprinkle the buttered bread with garlic powder and bake for 5 minutes, just until the bread is lightly toasted.
  4. While the bread toasts, pull or tear the string cheese into thin strips.
  5. Remove the toasted bread from the oven and spoon the marinara sauce evenly over each half.
  6. Lay 3 pepperoni slices on each sauce-topped half, then drape the string cheese strips across the pepperoni like mummy bandages.
  7. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for 10 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  8. Press two candy eyes into the melted cheese on each portion and serve the monster eye pizzas warm.

Notes

Swap candy eyes for sliced black olives to make it fully savory.
Use any melty cheese like mozzarella sticks, string cheese, or shredded mozzarella if that's what you have.
Toast the bread just until lightly golden so it stays sturdy and doesn't dry out in the second bake.
Keep an eye on the oven near the end; cheese is done when it's melted but not browned for the best bandage look.
Let the mummy melts cool for 2 minutes before adding candy eyes so the sugar eyes don't melt or slide off.
These are best served warm and fresh out of the oven; store leftovers in an airtight container and reheat in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes.
Make it a party by setting out extra toppings like black olives, sliced cherry tomatoes, or fresh basil.
